Local solutions, strong partnerships and a shared vision for rural health

The future of rural healthcare won’t be built through one-size-fits-all solutions. It will be shaped by local communities, powered by strong partnerships, supported by place-based workforce development and grounded in equity, trust and connection.

That was one of the strongest themes to emerge from the 18th National Rural Health Conference (NRHC), where members of our team joined researchers, clinicians, policymakers and health leaders from across Australia to explore the challenges and opportunities facing rural, regional and remote communities.

Held in Adelaide over three days, the conference provided an opportunity to share ideas, learn from innovative approaches being implemented across the country and contribute to discussions about the future of rural healthcare.

Many of the conversations reflected the same principles that underpin our work across rural Australia: community voice, place-based solutions, workforce development, collaboration and equitable access to care.

We were proud to contribute to the national conversation through four presentations showcasing research, innovative service models and partnerships that are helping improve access to care in regional communities. Beyond the presentations, the conference provided valuable opportunities for our staff to engage with leaders in the sector.

The topics our team presented explored a range of issues facing rural Australia, including allied health workforce attraction and retention, improving access to paediatric assessment and early intervention closer to home, supporting the next generation of rural psychologists through training and supervision, and innovative referral pathways that help connect vulnerable older people with support earlier.

The conference also highlighted the importance of workforce development, innovation and community-led solutions. Sessions explored topics ranging from growing the rural and First Nations health workforce to how research conducted in unexpected settings, including space, is advancing our understanding of ageing, human health and healthcare delivery in remote environments.

Throughout the conference, our mhi hub-branded coffee cart provided a space for delegates to connect over coffee, exchange ideas and share their perspectives on the future of rural healthcare.

We were grateful to everyone who stopped by to share their insights, experiences and hopes for the future of rural healthcare. These conversations reinforced the value of bringing together communities, clinicians, researchers, policymakers and partners to share knowledge and learn from one another.

Across all three days, the conversations reinforced something we see every day in our work across rural Australia: communities are best placed to help shape the solutions that will improve their health and wellbeing. The challenge, and opportunity, is bringing together the right people, evidence and partnerships to make those solutions possible.

We returned home with new ideas, new connections and plenty of optimism about what’s possible when people work together to improve access to care and health outcomes for rural Australians.
